many photographers include an engagement session with their wedding photography packages -- i am one of those photographers.

this is a fabulous opportunity for you to spend some time with the person who will be there for every moment (good or bad) of your wedding day.

it will help you to see a little of their 'shooting personality', and it is crucial you get along well; wedding day is a fast paced, emotional roller coaster -- it is great if you 'click' with your photographer.

i find engagement sessions quite fun and relaxing -- it offers me an opportunity to see what poses work best for different people as well as time to learn a little more about my clients.

Good-bye to a Great Friend

Since I got her in 1997, I knew that I would outlive her, but I never knew how difficult it would be to say good-bye.
Kurrie (May 1997-October 2010), was my best friend for many years and certainly a huge part of our 'family', which up until Thursday consisted of myself, my husband Kyle and our three dogs: Kurrie, Judah and Aussie.
Kurrie was a gentle, loving and active dog who went everywhere with us...walks, canoes, camping trips and just about anywhere else we would take her. She was always lady-like and a great ear for me over many years of moving about and various ups and downs.
She just finally became too sick and too tired to go on. We had a difficult decision to make, but we knew she was in too much pain to go on, even though she would have as long we we kept her, since she was the most faithful, loyal and devoted friend I could have ever asked for.
I miss her dearly and wish I could have had her forever, as she is irreplaceable -- even my handsome boys (Judah and Aussie) cannot take her place.
Thus closes a huge chapter in my life, and I turn the page, saying good-bye to the best friend I've ever had.

Well, it has been one crazy summer for the Shutterbug, living up to the name fully!

I just brought home the pieces I made for the awesome show I had at the Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge with two of my colleges and friends, Catherine O'Mara and Susan Higgins. I made photographs which they then interpreted in their own media. Catherine is an egg-tempera painter and Susan is a fused glass artist. It was so interesting to see their views and I think interesting for them to see how I further altered my photos with the sandwiching techinique I am so fond of.

today is the annual en plein air painting and auction event! i have over 25 artists and junior artists arriving shortly to pick up their paints, canvasses and lunches. they will then have from 9am to 2pm to make their painting. at 3pm we will be auctioning off the paintings on the town hall steps! all proceeds go to student arts bursaries and last year we raised 3 one thousand dollar bursaries!
it is a great event and as per usual, moth nature is on our side!

the summer is off to a booming start as i have been very busy with weddings every weekend! i spent the majority of the beginning of wedding season at touchstone on lake muskoka. this is a fabulous venue which offers a fairy private waterfront setting. this photograph shows on a small portion of the spectacular views that can be seen from any point on the property.

wedding season has arrive! here is a great tip that may help you check off something on your wedding check list. bridal bouquets can be the perfect solution to making your head table look amazing. using all the bouquets as center pieces will keep your flowers fresh and display them beautifully. a very unique idea i came across at a wedding was to fasten the bouquets to the edge of the table. vases in any size or shape can also be a great alternative!

after saying "i do", greeting family and friends and having a fabulous photo shoot with the wedding party, it is often time to dance the night away! there are many great ways to keep your guests thoroughly entertained. a fun idea i came across last summer at a wedding was that hiring a belly dancer is a great way to start the night off. she was very good at getting the guests involved and did an amazing job. it is also always important to have an amazing dj or live band with a wide variety of music for all your guests to enjoy!

on wedding day all eyes usually are on the gorgeous bride in her elegant dress, but there are so many small details that the newly weds have put into a wedding. one that is often the first thing noticed at the reception are the center pieces. center pieces can be all shapes and sizes and are a great way to make your venue look truly unique. anything from flower arrangements, fish bowls with brightly coloured fish and pussy willow trees can make amazing center pieces!

as a photographer, taking pictures of the wedding party is often the highlight of my day. after all of the family photos are done it is exciting to get time to let the wedding party have their own fun private photo shoot where they can be as silly as they please. we can often venture off and find amazing locations for taking pictures for a few hours.

at many weddings i have been to, the gifts for the wedding party from the bride and groom ended up being props for all the pictures. great wedding party gift ideas can be anything from jerseys, as shown above, to engraved paddles, matching moccasins, or maybe even matching rubber boots!

the first dance can be a tricky thing to plan but here are a few ideas that might help you out!

if you don't have a song picked out yet and don't know where to begin a good thing to think about is what kind of atmosphere you would like to create. a first dance song doesn't always have to be slow and romantic but it can also be something upbeat to get your guests more involved. i have seen people use songs anywhere from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole to "500 Miles" by The Proclaimers.

another thing that can be helpful is to hire a choreographer. a choreographed first dance is entertaing for your guests to watch and may put some dancing fears to rest!

a fabulous idea i came across at a wedding last summer was these very cute bride and groom boxes. each was filled with fun stuff that each of them could enjoy either on their big day or after the fact. the boxes themselves were so cute even on their own!

after a beautiful ceremony and a bit of mingling guests always need a way to find their temporary home for the night. although the seating chart at a wedding doesn't seem like a huge deal, it can be a fun way to organize your guests.

an idea i came across and loved was actually very simple!
the guest names were listed under the appropriate table number and these lists were printed on vellum paper and were then attached to a tall, glass candle holder. when they candles were lit you could still read the names but it gave each part of the seating chart a magical glow.

as the summer wedding season approaches there are many final details that make your special day truly unique. in my opinion of the more enjoyable of these tasks would be to test out dessert options!

there are so many options but it is important that your cake goes with the theme of your wedding as it is often a focal point at dinner.

a big trend i have noticed in the past year was that many brides chose to have cupcake tower cakes. this offered guests the option to take home their cute individual portion in custom boxes or to simply devour it on the spot!

fabulous fresh flowers.....

naturally when a bride pictures herself on wedding day, the picture always includes a bouquet of some sort. we see so much variety in the bouquets that are held: from loose and flowing wildflowers to perfectly placed roses, the punch of colour in front of the bride's dress has significant impact....plus it gives her something to do with her hands (there are no pockets on a wedding dress).

although the season dictates to a certain extent what types of flowers you will be able to use in your bouquets, there are thousands of options for flowers out there. remember to sniff the fragrance of the flowers as well -- the scent of flowers can be more intoxicating than any perfume off the shelf. look for a florist who is creative and willing to try something new for your big day....

today the olympic torch flame passed through huntsville!

i was lucky enough to have the festivities pass right in front of my gallery today and then continue on the stage that was set up in river mill park.

it was great to see all the support shown by the town as everyone gathered to welcome the torch.

amazing wedding tip #581: stepping in the right direction

most brides dream of dancing the night away on their big day. getting all the people you love and cherish in the same place at the same time can prove to be a difficult thing to do, making it very important to take advantage of this rarity when it occurs!

an increasing trend i have noticed over the past year is that the majority of brides i had the privileged of taking pictures for had very fun shoes to go along with their gorgeous dresses.

some had funky insoles to ensure comfort all night long, some had vintage shoes, some just had very unique white shoes but the most favoured colours this season were blue and red shoes.

choosing blue shoes on your wedding day not only brings a dash of colour as you are dancing away but also can double as your something blue!

at one of the weddings i photographed this summer in algonquin park at arowhon pines a bride made these cute little gift boxes for her wedding party.

these chinese food boxes, that were decorated and converted into little temporary homes for the cute little tree that was in each of them, were a very unique and memorable gift idea.

i have seen many amazing gift ideas but this one seemed especially suited for a wedding in the heart of algonquin park.

wedding season is pretty much over, with the exception of those who are brave enough to experience a fairytale winter wonderland wedding.

i thought i would take the opportunity this winter to pass on some wonderful wedding ideas that i have witnessed over the past year.

in beautiful muskoka it can often be difficult for guests to find the location of a bride and grooms venue of choice. at many weddings i have been to, couples have created unique signs to guide their guests along the dusty path.

this seems to set the mood along the way and make directions much easier!

after returning home from my barrie wedding, i quickly downloaded and recharged my equipment so i could get back on the road to get myself to maitoulin island for a shoot with the northern ontario aquaculture association. what a great time we had meeting and photographing the fish farmers. everyone was so hospitable and genuine.
in my spare time i had a chance to capture a little of what the island has to offer -- which is a lot!

june 13th took us to barrie for a wedding. it turned into a beautiful day.
tangle creek golf club held this romantic ceremony in front of one of their gorgeous gardens and then provided a wonderful space for them to dance the night away.
we got to drive around in golf carts as we looked for perfect places to take pictures!

Photovoice is the Muskoka version of a world-wide grassroots initiative begun in 1992 by two American academics enabling rural women of Yunnan province in China to share their life experiences through still photography to promote social change.

We hope you will come in and join us for an informative and eye-opening look at four parents experience of raising children in Huntsville and Bracebridge.

i was down in toronto this weekend for a wedding at the old mill. what a lovely place for a wedding reception, and the anglican church the ceremony was held in was equally beautiful and grand.

in addition to the stunning art and flourishing gardens at the partidge residence, i was able to make some beautiful photos of jon at his pottery wheel. he and suzann have worked for many years, very thoughtfully, to create a studio and gallery that inspires.

while we will shoot more than 40 weddings this season and at least half as many family portraits, i still make the time to do some commercial work for various publications and companies. i recently spent some time at the artful garden, an art show hosted by jon and suzann partridge at their beautiful home in bracebridge. i was contacted by an interesting woman, claire murray, to document the show and the gardens for her stunning publication, la vie claire. the award winning magazine is based out of the states and focuses on artful living. she has a design team that would make any publication envious, and the photography is nothing short of brilliant. i am thrilled to be a part of it.

as i mentioned before, this summer has been so incredibly busy, but since i have such a great job, i am always having fun. i had the pleasure of spending a little while with these two young children and their folks.....who knew having your photo taken could be so fun?!!?!

about a year and a half ago, i hired a fantastic guy named scott turnbull who has become not only my right arm at times, but also a superb photographer. he shoots weddings both with me and on his own for the company, and is simply an all-round great person....this is only one example of the many great photos he has made during his employment thus far.....i suppose we'd all expect nothing less, given his teacher...heehee.

while on my honeymoon i had the opportunity renew my love for infrared film. i have not been shooting with it much over the last while, and i cannot figure out why! i remembered how much i love the drama this film offers.

for anyone who actually looks at this, i apologize for my negligence! i promise to try harder to update this thing! at ant rate, i wanted everyone to know that i have been so busy working on my upcoming show entitled AUTOBODY. it is a look at our changing relationships within our natural world and through the progression (?) of technology. it opens on march 31st at the chapel gallery in bracebridge and will feature two other artists, matt chucrh, welder and michael foster, photographer. hope we will see you there....in the meantime, here is a sneak preview of what i have been working on.....

since summer is so busy with weddings, it is nice to have the opportunity to photograph familes at their summer homes. children are especially fun to photograph, like these two brothers evan and merrick. don't they just scream 'brotherly love'? heehee.
